An winter evening

An evening view towards South, towards Mont Rogneux (3084m) and Mont Brulé (3676m).

Powdery landscape

A freshly snow landscape, only marked by a nightly wild hare (and some backcountry skiers on the right) serve as the foreground of a view of the Pennine Alps, with Catogne peak in prominence.

Val de Bagnes

Between Mont Fort and Mont Gelé to the North and the multiple peaks of the massif of the Grand Combin to the South, this deep valley is now fully plunged in Winter mode.

Winter dressing

Leaving the landscape almost monochromatic, the higher altitude forests are now full dressed in snow.

And so, they ski

A fresh and fluffy mountain coating, where before stood grassland, invites those that like the more powdery tree lines, away from the official slopes.

Last of Autumn

The landscape tells the tale of how Autumn is nearly defeated by the heaviness of Winter.

Winter meets Autumn

With the deciduous trees still dressed in their Autumn colours, a heavy snowfall marks the beginning of Winter.

Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS)

The goal of my hike today, a nicely tailed space visitor straight from the Oort cloud. Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) highlights the sky at dusk, with the Milky Way as its background. Below, and (luckily for astrophotography) well hidden by clouds, the human-made lights of the local villages surrounding Lac de Joux and Lac Brenet compose and pair well with the remaining sunlight.

French Alps

From afar, the French Alps emerge from the sea of clouds that overshadow Lac Léman. Well above it, high-altitude cloud formations reflect what remains from the sunlight this day.

Mont Blanc

Then sunset casting its golden tones over the whites of the well-known Mountain that keeps its color all year long. As seen from Dent de Vaulion, Vallorbe.

Overlooking

Some people walk steadily, some run as fast as they can. Each one has his/her own goals, but one is shared among all.

Mont Collon

Mont Collon (3673m) and its glacier, overshadowed by approaching storm clouds.

Dent de Perroc

With the highest peak at 3676m, a massive wall of rock, ice and granite splits the deeps valleys of the Pennine Alps. As seen from Lac Bleu.

Trail hunters

Lac Bleu

Fed directly by the glacier of Aiguilles Rouges d'Arolla, a small lake sits serene in an alpine meadow. A common stop for local hikers in a sunny Summer day, it holds up to its name.

A little mountain garden

On the Eastern side of Mont Gelé, a little plain comes to live with little streams of melting snow. The local calls it Jardin Japonais, as if perfectly designed by intention and not just sheer erosion. The latter holds true.

Framed ascent

While hiking up the trail, gaining altitude as the forest reduces in density, one catches a little glimpse of what is ahead.
