Winter dressing

Leaving the landscape almost monochromatic, the higher altitude forests are now full dressed in snow.

And so, they ski

A fresh and fluffy mountain coating, where before stood grassland, invites those that like the more powdery tree lines, away from the official slopes.

Last of Autumn

The landscape tells the tale of how Autumn is nearly defeated by the heaviness of Winter.

Winter meets Autumn

With the deciduous trees still dressed in their Autumn colours, a heavy snowfall marks the beginning of Winter.

Old Scots Pines

In Glendalough woodlands, a patch of old Scot Pine trees stand as guardians of a stream, holding grounds deep in this valley. While I went there for the local waterfalls, I couldn’t help but look up.

Fractal textures

Not really a forest but... There's something very interesting about how man is always bound to a lifelong struggle, which its sole purpose is to emerge with a structured organization from Nature's chaos. Would it be surprising if we find out that, in the long run, is nothing but pointless endeavor?

The dune guardians

A long stretch of a well kept pine forest, with its roots holding the sand dunes together, is what stands between the might of the Ocean and all the flatland inland. Just trees...

Mullinhassig Woods and Poulanassig Waterfall

A small water stream, with it's occasional moods, breached the landscape into a deep ravine. In this valley, a forest is kept safeguarded from the elements. Not so much from man... Mullinhassig Woods and the humble but attractive Poulanassig Waterfall were a nice find quite close to Cork.
By the way, some say a mermaid, in the form of a salmon, lives somewhere in this waterfall's pool. Couldn't find it…

Fighting darkness

The Sun bursting its way through a forest, fighting shade and filling darkness with its light and warmth. One can find so many analogies to life itself in such a dramatic display.

Be different!

Be different! It makes you much more interesting. In a forest essentially composed of very tall spruces and other evergreen species, a smaller deciduous tree stands out, gloriously reflecting sunlight from its autumn dressed leaves.

Light over darkness

I could see it, feel it, and experience it, moving in and across the landscape, downwards into the chilled, undisturbed lake. Slowly, determined, resolved to overwhelm shadows and fight off all its demons. Sunlight gradually creeped in, casting its blessing and warmth upon darkness and all those who inhabit the glaciar valley and the forest within. An astronomical blessing.

Heavy textures

Ireland is all grasslands… Maybe not. I love the golden tones of Winter contrasting with the dark purple grays of wet sandstone on this southern face of Shehy Mountains.

Ireland countryside dressed for Winter

One of the great things about using backroads is that you never know what kind of landscape you may encounter. This week, a snow fall has taken up the hilly regions of West Cork County, sprinkling the green pastures in white tones.

Once dominant…

Standing for ages passed and thriving for another day, this noble and ancient being is bathed by early sunlight. Portuguese northern forests were once dominated by oak trees… Some things should never change.

Death…

Distant from the closest woods, a lonely and decaying tree remains erect over the surrounding scenery. While the tree is dead, its trunk still holds life, as birds of prey may use its cavities for nesting or use it as a watch tower
